The 'Friends of WR963' has been established to promote and preserve a unique
memory of the Shackleton aircraft and make the aviation community, and its
friends, aware of the need and importance of preserving living aviation history
for all generations to follow. The Shackleton fleet first entered service with the RAF in 1951 and the last flying
service aircraft finally flew 40 years later in 1991. RAF Shackleton
aircraft were flown in many roles on many squadrons serving in Coastal Command,
Strike Command and finally a Squadron of Shackletons flew for Fighter Command in
the late '80's and early 90's. |
